How it works

Katahdin ewes are pregnant for about 147 days, just under 5 months, and most lamb between day 142 and day 152 after breeding. The Katahdin is an American hair sheep, developed in Maine from the 1950s onward by crossing African hair sheep with meat breeds. It grows a winter coat of hair and wool that it sheds in spring, so it never needs shearing, and that is a big part of why it has become one of the most popular breeds on small US farms.

Katahdins are less seasonal than most wool breeds. Many ewes will breed outside the usual fall season, which lets some flocks lamb in spring and again in fall, or lamb three times in two years. Ewes are also known as good, attentive mothers that usually lamb on their own, and twins are the common litter once ewes are mature.

Because no shearing is needed, you won't crutch or shear before lambing as you would with a wool breed. Use the two weeks before the window to set up lambing jugs, check the ewes' body condition and trim any dirty hair or wool around the udder.

How to use it

Enter the day the ram went in. Sheep cycle about every 17 days, so if he stayed for two cycles (about 34 days), add the ram-out date so the window covers every possible lambing day. The Katahdin preset (147 days) is already selected.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Katahdin sheep pregnant?

About 147 days, just under 5 months. Most Katahdin ewes lamb between day 142 and day 152 after breeding.

Can Katahdin sheep breed year-round?

Many can. Katahdins are less seasonal than most wool breeds, so a lot of ewes will breed in spring and summer as well as fall. That lets flocks plan more than one lambing a year, but it also means a ram left in by mistake can breed ewes at any time.

When can a Katahdin ewe lamb be bred?

Many breeders breed ewe lambs at about 7–9 months once they reach about two-thirds of their adult weight. Others wait so the first lambing comes at about 2 years old. A well-grown ewe lamb is the key either way.

Do Katahdin sheep need help lambing?

Most lamb on their own and mother well. Still check ewes several times a day during the window, and call your vet if a ewe strains for more than about 30–45 minutes without progress.
