How it works
Goats carry their kids for about 150 days, roughly five months, with a normal range of about 145 to 155 days. Miniature breeds run shorter: Nigerian Dwarf and Pygmy does often kid around day 145. Twins are the most common litter, first fresheners frequently have a single, and mature does of some breeds regularly have triplets or quads.

What happens when
- Day 18-24: if she comes back into heat, she did not settle. No heat is the first real sign she is pregnant.
- Day 30: a blood pregnancy test is usually reliable from here.
- Day 30-60: ultrasound can confirm the pregnancy and often count kids.
- Day 90 onward: most of the kids' growth happens now, so feed quality starts to matter.
- About 60 days out: dry off a milking doe.
- About 30 days out: ask your vet about a CD&T booster, timed so antibodies reach the colostrum.
- Last 2 weeks: the udder fills, and in first fresheners it can fill weeks earlier.
Signs kidding is close
In the last day or two the ligaments either side of her tailhead soften until you can almost close your fingers around the tail bone: this is the single most reliable sign. Her sides hollow out as the kids move into position, she may paw bedding, talk quietly to her flank, hold her tail up, and separate herself from the herd. A long string of clear discharge usually means labour within a few hours.
A kidding kit worth having ready by day 140
Clean towels, iodine or chlorhexidine for navels, disposable gloves, lubricant, a bulb syringe, a torch, scissors and dental floss for the cord, a bottle and nipple, and your vet's number saved on your phone. Most kiddings need nothing from you at all, but the ones that do need it need it fast.
When to call the vet
Call if she has been pushing hard for 30 minutes with nothing showing, if you see only a head or only one leg, if there is a strong smell or dark discharge before any kid arrives, if she is past 155 days with no sign of labour, or if she is off her feed and dull in the last weeks of pregnancy.
