How to use this chart
Find the month the cow was bred in, then her breeding date in the left column. The date beside it is the expected calving date at 283 days. For a group bred on pasture, look up both the day the male went in and the day he came out: the calving window runs between those two dates.
The chart is a fixed 283-day count. If you want the date adjusted for your breed, plus the checks worth doing along the way, use the Cattle Gestation Calculator, which also sends the dates to your phone's calendar.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read a calving chart?
Find the breeding or AI date, then read across for the expected calving date at 283 days.
Does the calving date change by breed?
Yes. Holsteins and Jerseys average about 279 days, Angus 281, Hereford 285, and Brahman up to 292. Shift the chart date by the difference for your breed.
Do bull calves take longer?
Usually by a day or two, and twins normally arrive earlier.
When should the cow move to the calving area?
About a month before the chart date, into a clean, dry, sheltered spot you can check easily.
